Most music helps us escape reality… But Karilyo’s debut EP will block all your exits, drag you right back into it, and make you look the truth dead in the eye. 

Named after the traditional Filipino shadow-play, Karilyo has a way of using darkness to shed a blinding light on societal issues we often choose to ignore. Blending alternative rock, metal, and grunge, the band is solidifying their raw, unapologetic sound with the release of their debut EP, ‘REYALIDAD!’

Like reality itself, the EP doesn’t reveal everything at once. Each song builds on the last until the bigger picture becomes impossible to ignore. Di Ko Maintindihan captures the frustration of questioning a status quo that no longer makes sense. Wag Kang Matakot urges listeners to step beyond fear and confront those questions head-on, leading into the title track Reyalidad, which captures the unsettling moment of finally seeing the world for what it is. 

From that awakening comes M.K.M (Masyado Kang Matapang), the EP’s defining statement: an unflinching confrontation with unchecked power and a fearless call for justice against a system that thrives on silence. But Karilyo knows that seeing the truth is only the beginning. Alak reflects the pain of those trapped in an endless cycle of suffering, before Halikana brings the story full circle with a haunting reminder: the story isn’t over. Unless something changes, history has an uncanny way of repeating itself.

Ultimately, Reyalidad doesn’t hand listeners the answers. Instead, it leaves them with the questions many have learned to stop asking. More than just a debut EP, it’s an invitation to witness, remain vigilant, and to refuse the comfort of looking away.

Because in a world where it’s easier to tune the truth out, Karilyo chooses to tune in, proving to us that the most powerful thing music can do isn’t help us escape reality… It’s to make sure we finally see it.
